Surgical Orthodontics
Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is sometimes necessary to correct misalignments or other abnormalities in the upper jaw and lower jaws. For this type of orthodontic treatment, we work closely with an oral surgeon to create a treatment plan.
Orthognathic surgery can involve surgical procedures such as an osteotomy (bone cutting), bone grafts, or distraction osteogenesis (stretching of the bone) to reposition the jaw and correct misalignments. Orthognathic correction is conducted in stages and the course of treatment can last a few months up to one year or more.
Successful completion of orthognathic surgery and the orthodontic treatment that may follow can help improve your speech, breathing, and chewing, as well as having a positive impact on your appearance and self-esteem.
